Odisha Open Tennis: Hans retains double crown

Local lad Kabir Hans reaffairmed his reputation as the No 1 men’s tennis player of Odisha by retaining his double crown in the 12th KDTA Odisha Open Tennis Tournament, which concluded here at Bhubaneswar Club today.

Now a trainee of Ahmedabad Racquet Academy, Hans bagged the double crown by emerging champion in men’s open singles and doubles events. He beat Ansu Kumar Bhuyan in singles final 6-4, 6-4 to take home the Major Sandeep Mohapatra Memorial Trophy and a cash prize of Rs 15,000.

In the doubles final, Hans and stalwart Ajay Nishank prevailed over Ansu Bhuyan and Asutosh Das in straight sets. Organised by Khordha District Tennis Association, the four-day tournament, carrying a total cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, featured six events.

Rutuparna Choudhy and Satirtha Patnaik won the mixed doubles title, defeating Asutosh Das and Ananya Yadav in the final. Former Odisha cricket captain Pravanjan Mullick and Jhadeswar Das emerged 45-plus senior men’s doubles champions and so did Rabindra Senapati and Biranchi Narayan Mohanty in 55-plus senior men’s doubles.

The title in 45-plus senior men’s doubles event was bagged by Pramod Patnaik and Arun Birla. Odisha Sports Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera handed over the trophies at the closing ceremony. Odisha Tennis Association president Asit Tripathy, KDTA president Madhusudan Padhi, secretary Asit Pradhan, tournament referee Jatin Batsya and OTA manager Prakash Patnaik were present on the occasion.

Rutuparna Choudhury-Satirtha Patnaik (Rs 7,000) beat Asutosh Das-Ananya Yadav (Rs 3,500) 6-4, 6-3.
Mens Open Doubles: Kabir Hans-Ajay Nishank (Rs 8,000) beat Ansu Kumar Bhuyan-Asutosh Das (Rs 4,000) 6-4, 6-3.
Mens Open Singles: Kabir Hans (Rs 15,000) beat Ansu Kumar Bhuyan (Rs 7,000) 6-4, 6-4.
45+ Senior Mens Doubles: Pravanjan Mullick-Jhadeswar Das 6Rs 7,000) beat Gangadhar Lenka-Bandhu Mohanty (Rs 3,500) 9-1.
55+ Senior Mens Doubles: Rabindra Senapati-Biranchi Narayan Mohanty (Rs 7,000) beat Gangadhar Lenka-Somen Ghosh (Rs 3,500) 8-0.
65+ Senior Mens Doubles: Arun Birla-Pramod Patnaik (Rs 7,000) beat Prabhat Bakshi-V Raman 7-2 (Rs 3,500).
